Little Egret
Little Egrets are now reasonably common in South Devon (South West UK) having spread here from mainland Europe, whereas 10 years ago they were a real rarity.
I find it interesting how, at this time of year, such normally solitary, shy birds form colonies and nest closely together with Herons, their nests being literally only a metre or so apart in some places. They make striking ‘prehistoric’ sounding gargling noises while interacting and I have been told the red/orange feet colouration only lasts for perahps two weeks at the peak of the mating season.
