“All the things one has forgotten scream for help in dreams.” ~Elias Canetti

This image is an attempt to cleanse my dream states, filled again lately with what is known as Sleep Paralysis. I have experienced this sleep state for about twenty years, but last night was the first time in about 5 years. Please read the following, it is so important for those having this type of dream state to know they are not insane! It can be a frightening experience to many regardless of how many times the experiences has occurred. Most often it gives a sense of knowing one is dead, yet having the hearing, and smell working fully, allowing the person comfort of knowing they have not yet passed into another world.
Have you ever felt like you were awake but unable to move? You might have even felt afraid but could not call for help? This condition is called sleep paralysis.
Sleep researchers conclude that, in most cases, sleep paralysis is simply a sign that your body is not moving smoothly through the stages of sleep. Rarely is sleep paralysis linked to deep underlying psychiatric problems.
Over the centuries, symptoms of sleep paralysis have been described in many ways and often attributed to an “evil” presence: unseen night demons in ancient times, the old hag in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and alien abductors.
Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking.

Wonderful and very dreamlike image ( or nightmare like!)…you must have used about a million layers! Your work is always so impressive and well done! Read your description on sleep paralysis. I experienced it only once…but, that was enough! I recall it vividly…I KNOW I was awake, yet could not move anything…I tried to concentrate on just one body part and through sheer will power, make it move ( like my arm). But, I guess I’m just not that powerful! I finally snapped out of it. Must be scary to go to sleep for you, at times, wondering if that is going to happen. I used to have asthma…there were nights when I would wake up feeling like I had to cough…but, knew if I did I would soon be on my hands and knees gasping for air. It made me afraid to go to sleep at night. After moving to the south I discovered I was VERY allergic to mold! But, I have ( been here for 20 years) become used to it and avoid obviously moldy areas. Anyway…enough about me! I do hope this will be the final time you experience this terrible feeling!

  • Thanks so much for understanding Karen, yes I used many layers on this, just as many as there were in my sleep state! Still happening unfortunately! I am tired!
