Dagoba

These dome structures are found all over Sri Lanka and are said to hold the relics of sacred persons. They are often the destination of many a religious pilgrimage.

This Dagoba is in Mihintale, the place where Buddhism originated in Sri Lanka. We visited this site on a scorching hot day and to get to this point required a walk up 1,000 or so granite steps – bare foot.

Dagoba belongs to the following groups:

    NbN,

It seems you have done a great deal in SL. I have been to Mihinthale and this is one of the very sacred places in Sri Lanka. This particular dagoba is called Ambasthala Chethiya and the original dagoba is said to have built during 2nd century BC. Some old inscriptions (written in Brahmi) have been found at this site and have now been dated back to 1st Cnetury BC.
