Sparrows and swallows

I’m tired and I don’t belong here

They say home is where the heart is
but my heart is hollow

Every breath feels shallow
this chest is strict with tension

Each drop of blood that trickles
in and out of the chambers
feels like effortful chewing

I’d love to run and find my nest
but every time I move
my feet feel twisted like weeds to the earth

A compass with no north
A sun that follows
no matter how thick the clouds would grow

I close my eyes and wish instead
to be a beautiful swallow
that catches currents and sings new sonnets

Because I am no swallow in the sky
but a sparrow in a cage
with nowhere to go, going nowhere

And I cannot even see your eyes anymore

they were once blue
they were once burnt onto my skin

So come here now
for I am tired, caged and hollow
and need you to set me free
and guide me home

Artist's Description

Sometimes we tire of chasing our dreams, and when we feel like we’re getting nowhere, it would ever be so lovely, if our dreams found us for once, wouldn’t it.
