RedBubble Pirate Radio

You may have missed the monumental brainstorming session and the beginnings of a minor RB revolution yesterday. If so, you can catch up on the back story here. If you can figure out how to put together an audio clip then we want to hear your voices. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just staggered home from the pub or if you cock up the intro to your dedication. The more shambolic the better.

Paul McClintock is on hand to help with technical advice and we’ve had tips from pros like Diesel Laws and MuscularTeeth like adding intros, playing a backing track while you’re rambling and other bits.

So far we have four editions of RedBubble Pirate Radio:

  1. Me
  2. Ms Najeroux
  3. The Lovely Rhana
  4. Robpixaday

We need more. Oh … and if anyone’s in a designing mood we should probably have some sort of excellent graphic to go with all this. Perhaps a pirate radio flag rather than a ‘logo’ ... we don’t want to give the illusion that this is some kind of professional undertaking ;)

If you can put aside some time to shout into a microphone then you’re in. Let’s hear your recordings …

Oh … and SPREAD ZEE WORD! We need the internet equivalent of a street team.

I’d love to play. Sadly I am a total tech retard and don’t have the first clue on how to start. I mean, is there a programme on my mac I can use or something? I know I have a microphone so that’s gotta count for something yeah?

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

Ok. I started by downloading Audacity to make the recording. But I got a bit stuck on turning it into an mp3 so I exported it as a .wav file and signed up to a site called 4shared to upload. Then Paul stepped in and helped. Others seem to be hosting these on their tumblr blogs which seems like a way better idea. Can give more info on a quicker and better way?

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

Apparently Garageband is also good if you’re a Mac user. PC users can see below for a bit more advice.

Lady in a muppet suit, I’m having brain overload! There are o many thing we can do with this. I’ve figured out podcasting almost, oh shiz, I wanna phone you or something. Oh and if I was in World War II they’d call me spitfire. (Prodigy quotes are irresistable). We must be on the same wave length. I just woke up too (it’s 8pm Aust time at the mo…)

Yeah. I’m learning skills here. This is cool. I must say, I think we need some manly voices to balance things out a little. Lads, we need your recordings!

Haha. Who was in charge of the credibility again? Oh I think we gave that responsibility to nofrillsart while he was drunk. Carry on then …

Ok this sound shit hot but how do you do it?

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

Are you working on a mac or a pc?

PC girl …. like my apples stewed or fresh but not so much plugged in…... :)

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

I’ve done a little Google searching. This seems to be a good guide to the process if you’ve got Vista. Apparently Audacity works for Windows users too – you just need a microphone (a VOIP headset will do the trick if you haven’t got one built into your computer) and it’s quite simple to follow. And this guide explains what you need to turn the recording into an mp3. People seem to be signing up for tumblr accounts and uploading and hosting files there. Otherwise, if you have a blog or website you may be able to host it there. Let us know how you get on! :)

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

Just wonderful. I’m enjoying an 80’s flashback as we speak ;)

  • najeroux

    najeroux

Yep. All over it. Where are the lads? Oh, thats right, the pub probably. I’m going to go find some cheese.

    najeroux

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

Get the cheese with the wholegrain mustard through it. Highly recommended.

I SOOOO want to do this – but I’ll have to go step at a time, because I’m probably the last woman standing who doesn’t have an ipod, and who has no idea what an MP3 file is anyway …. but I’m following then links and going to give it a go!

  • Natalie Tylergiver of t-shirt love replied

And that is exactly the approach we love! :) Let us know if you get stuck and we’ll do our best to help! My number one tip is Google all the way. If you don’t know how to do something, Google has the answers.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of using these for poetry readings Matt. Wonderful. Wonderful Wonderful. I think our writers should take on the wanna be djs with a few more of these. So glad you went to the trouble of sharing your voice with us :)

Wow!! thank you for including me!! That’s so cool!!!!!
I did a video version (test) shortly after that, using only part of the song along with some photos, and posted it to YouTube so I could link to it here. Last night I received a message from YouTube about copyrights and licensing for the music. ACK!! Normally I use only my own work (art, music, writing) so this was my first experience with that situation. The link they gave me was no help, so I deleted the video. I’m mentioning it here for two reasons:
I’m concerned now about using the entire song in the audio I posted on tumblr and the fact that I mentioned “RedBubble Pirate Radio” would drag RedBubble into any copyright/licensing issues…
Do you know if it’s permissible to “broadcast” someone else’s music this way? Do we need to pay royalties, etc.?
::sigh:: I’m probably worrying for nothing, but….......................

    ??

  • robpixaday

    robpixaday

Anyway, next time I do one it’ll just be me, speaking or playing my own music…nothing to take action over. I’ll probably delete that tumblr one soon, unless I know it’s OK.
