Taken in St Augustine’s Asylum in Chartham, Kent (UK) in February 2011.

St Augustine’s Asylum opened in 1875. The hospital gained notoriety in the 1970s when it was the subject of a committee of inquiry into malpractice and mismanagement. The asylum closed in 1993 and the site is now occupied by housing, although a few of the original hospital buildings remain.

This was/is the site of some beautiful old buildings – we had a place just like this (Stoke Park) in Bristol. I think your image is the perfect depiction of the terrible things that happened in these places – riveting image!!!

  • Many thanks for stopping by and commenting :o) unfortunately there aren’t a lot of buildings left on the site as they’ve been replaced with housing but it was great to explore what does remain!

  • Many thanks for your comment – there’s still lots to explore in what remains on the site, but it is in a bad state of decay!

you really captured the essence of what some asylums really were….shades of “One Flew Over the Cookoo’s nest.” treatment of the patients…
