Artist's Description

Tawny Frogmouths are Australian native birds that habitat open woodlands and urban areas alike. They are often mistaken for Southern Boobooks, but are not owls at all. Frogmouths are members of the nightjar family, and are more closely related to kookaburras and kingfishers than to owls. However, like the owls, they are silent night hunters. In flight, they do not make a sound! Birds of prey are easy to identify; their eyes are always set forward.

This is one of four chicks that frequented my yard in Brisbane QLD last summer (2009-10). There were two nesting pairs, each producing two chicks, so we had eight birds in total at one stage. The females would sit with their chicks while the males were banished to the other side of the tree (or yard). I feel so privileged that they deemed my home safe enough to raise their young. Australia is certainly a lucky country when it comes to wildlife. Even in the cities, it’s quite literally on our doorstep… or above it!

Photos taken with Canon IXUS 80 IS and edited with Lightzone. SIMPLICITY is my niche!

The Sollution:

My cat Jasper just couldn’t help himself. Two of the Frogmouths regularly roosted on the downpipe for their day-long siestas. He could see them, and they could see him. He was impatient, so after weighing up the situation, he shot up the tree, crossed the only stable branch, and found himself… on the roof. Perfectly safe, the birds looked on with what could only be described as amusement. He had buckley’s chance… and they knew it! Once the comedy show was over, they settled in for a quiet days sleep. Jasper slept too, and serenity reigned supreme.
