Barren

See that tree
standing seemingly
Alone
by the dam
near
the long blank road
that keeps
people passing by
branches
bereft of bounty
a skeleton of self
boldly leaving
bones of bare beauty
strong against the sky
is it the
dignity of death
humming
side by side
with life?
or is it the
stillness of sleep
dreaming of
yesterday’s echo
playing lullabies
In the bass notes
that only the empty fruit bowl
and the
barren womb
can hear
