Midnight Sleeper

Midnight Sleeper by Julie Langford

Midnight Sleeper

Thought I would have a go at some photo manipulation. I used a sky image from a tutorial file that I found in the RedBubble forum and just played around with the lion image.

First I saw the t shirt, then I saw the original lion, then I finally found this one! I like them all a lot (would lbe interesting to see this one posted by the original on page 1) What a peaceful scene. The blue and white and moonlight are lovely.

Right – Cant find the tutorial anywhere now [it was ages ago], but I didnt follow it, I just took some hints off it – I will try and type here, what I did to create the image.

    Here goes

First, get a nice moody image of the sky – the more clouds the better. Change the colours using colour adjustments to get a nice brilliant blue colour. Add light using the dodge tool on high exposure and then add depth to some of the clouds with the burn tool.

Next, either use an image of the moon or a moon brush and add the moon on a new layer. Then erase the part of the moon where you want the cloud to cover it. Use dodge again to make the moon nice and bright

Next – the lion. Use a freehand marquee selection tool, with feathering of about 30, to extract the lion from its background [you dont have to be too fussy as you can erase edges later]. Draw another freehand marquee selection around the lions face, then select inverse and blur the body and mane. Add some light to the face using the dodge tool then drop the saturation. Change the colour with colour adjustment to make a subtle blue hue.

Paste the lion image onto the sky as a layer, then blend in any rough edges with the eraser. Set the blending mode on this layer to screen to really brighten the lion up.

Flatten the image and use dodge tool to add light where you want it [especially around the moon, the clouds close by the moon and the lions face] and add stars with a brush.

    There it is.
