One of my favorite gifts to give to parents when their baby is baptized is an 8 × 10 picture collage with this poem. For illustrative purposes I’ve done it in this format, but usually I do it in a free-form almost scrapbook style type of format. I include the childs’ name and then the baptismal date. (You could also do this for an infant dedication). Frequently when we go to the hospital to visit the parents of a newborn I take several pictures for this specific purpose. If I was unable to see the child before the baptism I sometimes have asked grandparents or other family members if they would mind e-mailing me some of their favorite photos that they’ve taken to incorporate into the collage. Or, sometimes the family of the newborn has e-mailed me photos of their baby and I will then add those to the collage. I’ve always received a very positive response to these collages as they make a great keepsake for the parents and child alike.
The poem was taken from an Abbey Press catalog a long time ago. No author was stated on it or in the description. It is loosely taken from the Bible passage in Psalms 127:3 where it talks about how children are a gift from God. Then the other passage is from Psalms 139:13-16 where it talks about how God was there when the child was being formed and how wonderfully complex the child is.
