At least you werent part of the 10,000 strong mosh pit outside central station (neither was I, we were part of a much smaller crowd-2- at Leura). Great shot anyway, dont worry about the boats, they give a point of reference and a bit of difference to the run of the mill fireworks shots you often see.

However, nothing beats being directly underneath them when they go off whoa ha.

Happy new year to you and yours.

  • Andrew Bosman replied

Thanks Stuart and backatcha with the Happy NY greetings.

Sooopoib, as they say in NY! I’ve never had a good go at fireworks…..is it difficult….I had thought about using bulbsetting and covering the lens up with a bit of black card and lifting it at the appropriate moment…..

  • Andrew Bosman replied

Nothing is difficult when you know how uncle, and this is the first time I have ever shot fireworks.
Mostly, I used the av setting, f8, ISO 200 and -2/3 of a stop. This allowed between 2 and 4 seconds exposure, enough time to build the image and keep noise to a minimum.
I found that -2/3 worked well as the fireworks them selves were perfectly exposed. If I went to the “correct” exposure, they were too bright.
With -2/3 the rest of the image is a little dark but easily adjusted in camera Raw.
A footnote would be that I continue to be amazed by the resolving power of the 5D. Coupled with L series glass it seems to be particularly good at night…. and they reckon the 5D mkII is better…. can’t wait!

  • Simon Gladwin

    Simon Gladwin

Thanks for that Boz….....Roll on November 5th LOL….I shall have a go then…...as for the 5D mkII…..its the stuff of dreams…LOL…I will have to sell a few more prints first…....make that a few hundred prints LOL.

  • Christopher Ewing

    Christopher E...

you had to use the bulb setting on this to bring in this much light, excellent timing

  • Andrew Bosman replied

No bulb setting Christopher, settings as above.
It was only 9pm so still a little light left in the sky.

  • Christopher Ewing

    Christopher E...
