Education is a right, not a privilege by

NO MARKUP ON THIS
Some of you will be aware of what this is all about – others won’t be.

Here’s my feelings:
Education should be a right, for everyone, not a privilege for the rich. Our shit coalition government have decided to let universities charge up to £9000, per year, for student fees. Some students will owe in excess of £27000 at the end of their three-year course… let along the cost of living! What a way to start your adult, working life.

What the small print says:

UK cities hit by wave of marches and sit-ins over university cuts

Students and supporters confronted police in a wave of demos against tuition fees yesterday (1). In London, scene of violent clashes earlier this month, a police van was smashed up by a gang of protesters, who stole uniforms and riot shields from the wrecked vehicle (2). Police had been caught unprepared two weeks ago, allowing the mob to storm Tory HQ in Millbank. But yesterday, they ‘kettled’ the demonstrators, containing them in Whitehall and preventing them reaching Downing Street or Lib Dem HQ (3). But fires were started and barricades were thrown during clashes. There were three arrests in Whitehall and six marchers were injured. Two police officers were injured – one suffering a broken arm (4) – as the students tried to break through the police lines. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg (5) was the target of much of the fury across Britain for reneging on his manifesto pledge to oppose a rise in fees. He made a forlorn plea to the students to abandon the demo (6). But he was branded a liar (7) by the angry protesters and an effigy of him was burned in London. There was particular bitterness in Sheffield, where Clegg has his constituency (8). Elsewhere across Britain, there were a number of minor scuffles as protesters attempted to occupy buildings at universities and colleges. The plans to increase tuition fees in England to £9000 (9) per year do not affect Scotland directly but proposals to withdraw public funding for university teaching budgets for many subjects has a knock-on effect on Scottish universities. And it is feared that it is only a matter of time before fees are introduced north of the border. At Glasgow University, scuffles broke out as about 700 students demonstrated and there was a bid to storm the vice-chancellor’s office (10). After failing to break through police lines, they staged a sitdown occupation (11). Elsewhere in the city, two students were arrested at Strathclyde University after battling cops (12). More than 250 students sat in occupation in the lobby of the Collins Building on George Street. Later, there was a mass meeting in the city’s George Square. In Edinburgh, 300 students marched from Bristo Square to the Haymarket, where they staged a demo outside the Lib Dem HQ in Clifton Terrace. The students, accompanied by a large police presence, were contained in a large pen (13). As the students marched back to the university area, they staged sit-downs at busy road junctions (14). They then briefly occupied the registry at the university’s Old College.

(1) Good on you all – you have my complete support. (2) Haha! (3) Unlucky – better luck next time. (4) Pussy! (5) Prick! (6) Prick! (7) Yeah, you prick! (8) Don’t fucking come back, you prick! (9) Good for the rich, bad for the poor (10) Well done (11) Next best thing I suppose… you bunch of hippies! (12) Good effort! (13) At least it wasn’t a pigsty! (13) Careful now!

    Spot on
Our govt. in it’s wisdom introduced HECS (higer education scheme) back in 1990 and I’m still paying off the bastard, and then our PM gets on the box and complains that we aren’t the “clever country” anymore. It’s absolute bollocks, but a great T :)

  • Too right fella! ;-)
