Acrylic painting on 14″×11″ canvas panel
The beautiful Portland Head Light Lighthouse is one of Maine’s most photographed and painted lighthouses. The assignment I gave my acrylic students was to paint a limited palette painting of the famous lighthouse using a single cool or neutral color. They were allowed to use white of course and one additional color that was not to be seen in the painting, but to be used only as a darkening agent along with their main colour. I choose burnt seinna as my main color and burnt umber as my darkening agent. The purpose of the assignment was to teach them that there are always choices, that using various colors is not always the right choice, but rather creating tones of the same color may be the better choice. The idea is to give them as many tools as possible and let their future styles dictate which ones they more readily use.
