Floral Study Sketch - Blue Poppy by

Watercolour with Winsor Newton paints on Fabriano 140lb coldpress watercolour paper

OK, finally a flower I currently don’t have in my yard. I included this one as my third installment in this series simply because it makes an excellent addition to an arrangement when blue is needed.

This series now includes:

Floral Study Sketch – Holly Hocks

Floral Study Sketch – Sweet Williams

Floral Study Sketch – Blue Poppy

Buy it, I’m already well into my 60’s and if I’m going to be famous, well, I’m running out of time. I like to think my work has been influenced by the great impressionists, although my wife says it’s because I won’t go and get my eyes checked. At any rate, I do love to paint watercolour and acrylics and it’s a true wish of mine that you enjoy viewing my work. Go ahead and let me know what you think, I love to read your comments. (Well….the good ones anyway.)

Gorgeously painted in a lovely tender way like only you Jim can do, and what a nice colour combination!

  • And what a very fine comment Arie, thank you very much.

I really like this one, Jim. The blue is so vibrant. Quick question I’ve been meaning to ask forever…how does Fabriano paper compare to Arches? Any special characteristics?

  • Thank you Marsha for a lovely comment. To answer your question, I think Arches is still a higher quality paper but Fabriano is a very good high quality watercolour paper where the price is not so high and that you can get in a pad. It’s what I use in class, I don’t want to use the best stuff I have, but I also want to be able to demonstrate to my students what difference it makes to use a high quality paper as well.
