Covered Cafeteria Patio at Coastal Carolina by

Acrylic on canvas
original 8″×10″

The college at which I teach regularly has allowed me to add one more class this summer. I am teaching in addition to my regularly scheduled acrylic and watercolor classes, a Plein Aire class. So what you may see me post along with other works are pieces painted from the class which will be painting in various locations around the 45 acre main campus of Coastal Carolina Community College. This is the student center which houses a cafeteria which has a large covered patio off the back side.

Buy it, I’m already well into my 60’s and if I’m going to be famous, well, I’m running out of time. I like to think my work has been influenced by the great impressionists, although my wife says it’s because I won’t go and get my eyes checked. At any rate, I do love to paint watercolour and acrylics and it’s a true wish of mine that you enjoy viewing my work. Go ahead and let me know what you think, I love to read your comments. (Well….the good ones anyway.)

This is great Jim! A really beautiful and inspirational place you’ve got to paint and give your classes!

  • I am fortunate Maree, Coastal Carolina does have a very beautiful and well groomed campus. I also have some good (mostly former students) people in this class.

Nice work here brah’….now you are retired….aren’t you…’ve got a busy schedule….and taking on extra classes…..whew…..YDM.

  • The classes are a piece of cake kj, it’s this gardening thing Barbara likes to do. I didn’t realize when we started that she was the designer and I was the labor force. Stay busy brah’,

I really like the complimentary colors of red and green you used to create this beautiful painting, especially with the reds in the tree trunk. Nice plain aire work!

  • Not that much of any red, I think what you’re seeing is sienna instead of red. Thanks Jennifer.

A lovely pleine aire study Jim. I like the limited palette, and as Jenny said, the red/greens work so well.

  • Thank you Lynda, and did you notice “no smart comments this time.” Seemed like half the ladies on RB had something to say about it last time….LOL

Another wonderful piece Jim… never had the guts to paint Plein Aire… I am too much of a perfectionest! LOL

  • It does without question make me paint much looser. Thanks Susan.

Nice rich color…giving this your signature look. Maybe I should take a plein air class because I have such a rough time painting like that…..I somehow totally fall apart. Nice work as always.

  • It is a practiced skill much like anything else, the more you do it, the more relaxed you are at it. This class is as much about equipment and supplies as it is about technique. Even though we’re on the college’s campus I make them pack it like we were headed into the wilderness. I’ve learned some neat tricks from the OOPS group I paint with once a month.

never done a plein aire class Jim what time should I be there ? This is a lovely painting ..fresh with loads of juicy colours….enjoy your classes !

  • It’s one a week for six weeks Linda. You could fly in on a Wednesday, hang out with Barbara and I at the beach or backyard pool, the class is from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. on Thursday and head home on Friday. It’s doable…don’t you think?
