What a wondeful piece of commissioned work. They must’ve been thrilled with this. The whole thing is masterful, but I really, really like the way you rendered the tree out front. I wish so much I could learn to paint a tree without using a sponge to do it. This way looks sooooo much better.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Just dapping instead of sponging, Marsha. Slower process, but I like the end results better than sponging, although I still sponge some of the scrubs occassionally. Thanks.

This is beautiful Jim!The trees break the harshness of the red brick chapel without taking away the character and style of the building…well done!

  • Jim Phillips replied

Well on this one they asked that I stay true to the actual scene and the trees were there, so I can’t take too much credit for the composition on this one. Thanks Sandy.

  • Carolyn Staut

wonderful painting Jim. at last i gave up to study landscape. i will concentrait in portraiture from now.

  • Jim Phillips replied

You make that sound like a bad thing Hidemi. Portraits are a strenght of yours, so play on your strenght. That smart for any artist to do.

  • Fred Smilde

    Fred Smilde

again behind- do not know where the time goes- congrats on the commission- there is a wonderful solidity and sturdiness to the building- can sense its weight- like how the angles of the sky are slight offset to the general angle of the peice-looking again guess the angle works its way up to becoming more and more sharp- subtley done- nice work-

  • Jim Phillips replied

Those are very fine observations Fred. Thank you very much.

  • Colin Cartwright

Excellent detail here, Jim. Not easy, as you’ve chosen some difficult tones, with not much contrast, and a tough perspective. But you’ve done a superb job!! The only way I learn, is to slightly stretch myself further, on each painting I undertake. Straight into my faves.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Colin, I always come away feeling good after one of your wonderful comments. Thanks buddy.
