OMG…Call me when you need help going to the bank… as you take all of the new wealth that is going to come to you! This is mighty grand my friend!

  • Jim Phillips replied

That is mighty sweet to say, but I’d hate to think I had to live off my painting income. But then I’d probably not have the same passion if it were a job. Thank you very much Susan.

beautiful Jim, I love the way you get your bright colours in your paintings – that is why I am trying acrylics seem to get that effect more instantly than layering the watercolours – maybe I should get different watercolour paints and don’t want to lose the feel for them. would be a great cafe for a coffee. Picture perfect painting.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Thank you Linda for a very kind comment. I just curious, what watercolour brand you do use and where you are getting them?

Hi Jim, I am using Cotman’s watercolours and I am buying them from an art store – they are 8 ml tubes and tend to dry up as the tops dont fit after a while oh dear – have you heard of that brand?

  • Jim Phillips replied

Linda, Brian gave you an excellent answer, please read his response.

A particularly good painting Jim, Lots of colour and contrast.

If you don’t mind me helping out with Linda above – Cotman are really student watercolours, cheaper but with more filling and less brilliance, and they do tend to dry out in the tube. Artist’s colours are pretty expensive but go a long way so are really worth the extra. Same with paper, go for the best you can afford. I’ve asked the paint firms many times if they sell seperate caps, but none do – so far. The other thing some people do is to empty the tubes into pans and just re-wet them when needed.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Thank you Brian. I also referred Linda to your response. Very good. I know when I started I bought cheater paints but when over the years replaced them with higher quality one tube at a time.

Oh my goodness this is so lovely Jim…I can see myself sitting there with coffee and pastry on a summer afternoon, with a dear friend catching up on news….it’s very European, but I have such a cafe right in my neighbourhood with the same ambience…wonderful colour, light, and mood….love the details like the stone molding and the little balcony…gives the picture so much verisimilitude….

  • Jim Phillips replied

Couldn’t have a nicer comment, thank you Janis.

the foreground umbrella really makes this painting outstanding! The quality of light reminds me of the French impressionists.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Wow, thank you Douglas, it’s really appreciated.

For Linda…Cotman are not a very good brand…Winsor Newton is the best as far as I’m concerned and for me the best paper is Arches…using the lower quality brands means you don’t get good results and you end up very unhappy with your work…

  • Jim Phillips replied

I agree, WN is what I use. It’s the best quality without spending a small fortune on paints. I have 3 or 4 papers I prefer depending on what I doing.
