Forced To Retire

Mixed Media (watercolor with white acrylic highlights) 12”x8” on linen canvas sheet.

I would love to tell you about the location of this work, but the truth is my RB friend Carolyn Staut sent me the photo I used for this painting. She responded quickly to my indecision of what to paint by emailing me half a dozen photos. How cool is that?

Wow Jim! I am so impressed! I just love your treatment of this old Shrimper. The location is Conn Brown Harbor, Port Aransas, Texas. You have so perfectly done this image justice. Even though sunk and rusting away, you have added a quiet dignity that is priceless. Love it!

  • Jim Phillips replied

Hope you didn’t mind my giving you some credit. Thanks for your very kind remarks, Carolyn. And thanks again for favoring.

Avril, you know my close friend Carolyn Staut send me the photo to paint this. I really should buy a card and send it to her during her recovery. Hey, I do the same thing in that I’ve gone back to someone’s profile and asked “where did this come from?” LOL Thanks your comments are always very kind.

I also have to do a commissioned nautical painting for friends overseas have no idea where to start? will have to put my thinking cap on.

  • Jim Phillips replied

I may have posted this one earlier than you and I joined each others watchlist Linda. However, I reported to RB a problem with new work not being posted on my watchlist members a couple of weeks ago. Hope they have fixed it. If you need me to send you any nautical photos I will be glad to do so, just let me know what kind.

  • Colin Cartwright

    Colin Cartwright

This is a good painting. I find zinc gouache, good for highlights.
Interesting rusty wreck – just how I feel! Except when I paint.

  • Jim Phillips replied

Thanks Colin, I can relate-LOL. I’m not sure if I’ve ever tried the zinc in gouache, even though I do use gouaches. I’ll have to pick up a tube. I do have all the medals in watercolours though, brought a set. They were student colors, but like you, I only use them for highlights so it didn’t matter that much.

  • coolart

I have seen many such boats yachts etc in this situation, the compoisiton of a lone boat is both mounrful and sentimental

  • Jim Phillips replied

This old shimp boat was probably decommissioned from one of the hurricanes that hit the Texas coast. Thank you.

Wonderful work Jim. Really cool!!!! Great ‘stippled’ effect on the hull (is that what it is called?) of the boat and a wonderful composition. How you watercolourists do this sort of detailed and magnificent work leaves me gobsmacked!!!!

  • Jim Phillips replied

What a nice comment, Lynda. Gobsmacked, must be a down under word, but I like the sound of it just the same.
