Gotcha ;) I love photomanipulations but I am not sure if RB does…lots of views…not much talk. The artist in me is paranoid lol…

when I photograph a tree, I am reusing that tree. It is a stock tree only in three dimensions. So – given that all royalties, credits etc are done and observed, I don’t see any problem with using stock images. (Despite that, for some reason, I can’t get creative except with photos I’ve taken. So go figure!) This is a very good composite image. Nice work.
myoriginalsin replied
Thanks. Although not sure what you’re trying to say here…? I would love to use my own images but sometimes I just don’t have the resources or time. I am such a creative being, that if I am not creating I feel lost. So, I figure if I can do other ppl’s quality images some justice, then why not?
lightsmith
Let me try again.
I take a photo of a tree and use it in a different composite picture.
You take a stock image of a tree and use it in a different composite picture.
In one sense, we have done the same thing. Purists might argue that you didn’t photograph the original tree, which is true.
However, the tree I photographed GREW the way it did because of other people, because of the elements influencing it, because of the nature of the species and so on. So 98% of my tree picture is down to nature (or God), 1% is my selection of it, and 1% is my photographic ‘abilities’
In your case, 99% is down to others (God, nature and the photographer) and 1% is your selection of the image.
Which is why I see nothing particularly wrong in you using stock photographs (given copyright is observed, royalties paid, credits done etc etc etc).
myoriginalsin replied
...and although it is a stock photo I begin with, that certainly doesn’t make the creating of an image easy. I spend days (...longer) on some of my manipulations to create a piece of art work that conveys a message or a mood. The photographers of the stock photos I use are generally very impressed with the final result.
So I guess the purists are right I didn’t take the original photo. So I would say to them, don’t view my art, if you don’t believe in it :)
As for copyright, royalties and credits…I always give credit where credit is due and as for royalites…well I don’t think RB is going to make me a millionaire. I am not on here to make money, rather to share my art and a piece of myself to others… but if it does, I will be sure to compensate the original artists ;)
myoriginalsin
Shouldn’t my photo-manipulation abilities count for 1%? ;)
lightsmith
I must be having a bad bio-rhythm day!
Your photo-manipulation abilities probably count for 99% of your work! The 1% i refered to is in the selection of the item NOT what you do to it.
My percentages were relating to the source of the bits you composite, not to the overall work. That’s why I dont think it matters too much if you are using stock or your original photos.

Haha having one of those days myself. I totally understand what you’re saying and agree. Just throwing in my few cents worth for discussion or debate. Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

your work is stunningly romantic with the single figure…this one is different, dark and without figures.. just as powerful. Apple &moon make a double focal point.
