To Americans Ellis Island in New York City, and this old building is symbolic of the millions of immigrants that came to America bringing cultures from around the world. Whether European, Asian, African’s or South American.. Millions of families ancestors were processed here on their entry to the USA. Some lived for years here in their hospitals as only the healthy were allowed citizenship.
A while back my cousin found the records of one side of my family that had migrated here from Hungaria back in the early 19th century. My fathers people came from Scotland to Nova Scotia then on to the US as well. Like the many generations of imigrants that came and assimulated here, a generation later their children became true American’s a cultural mix of all that was brought here by others. Our nation is truely ethnically diverse, and that diversity has built the infrastructure of this land.
Last night, the Democrats nominated an African American to be our next president. (well I hope at least). It’s an amazing thing to bear witness to the rise of a son of an immigrant father, and ethnically diverse family (white and black) who in a generation, through his own efforts, education, and morality, has risen to a position where he can lead a nation. Especially this nation that so needs him now. This is the true American story. (update: Barack Obama was elected the 1st African American President of the USA Nov 11, 2008 and took office in 2009.)
This picture of Ellis Island is my tribute to all the families that have come here and contributed to our multi-cultural nation and to “Barack Obama” who I hope will lead us to peace and the renewal of what most American’s believe in, the respect for all cultures in this very diverse world.
