Digital Photography Tutorial (Photomontage) - Creating "Other Worlds""

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY TUTORIAL FOR THE PICTURE “OTHER WORLDS”

This is to provide an explanation on how Other Worlds was created from 3 separate photographs (photomontage). Photoshop CS 2 was used to combine the three pictures together.

The three pictures used to create Other Worlds are shown below along with an explanation of what was done to each picture to create the final picture. The technical data from each picture is provided as well. (this is to show it was three images, not graphical art to create the final picture.)

The 3 pictures were processed in Photoshop CS2. Each image was size adjusted to be compatible, the DPI was set to 300, and the picture profiles were set to “Kodak Interexchange RGB”. Since the pictures were taken with 2 different cameras with different pixel depth it was important to get them all compatible.

• First the Base Image was edited to increase the color saturation levels. A plastic wrap filter was applied to give texture to the overall image which was used as the base of the new picture.
• Next the moon was extracted and placed in its own layer and positioned on the base picture
• Last the birds were cropped and then extracted from the blue sky and placed in a layer. The layer was then positioned on the base image.

The result is the picture “Other Worlds”.

Technical data from the exif data recorded is below.

OMG…I just turn on my camera and if it looks good I take the picture!!! Mary you make me feel like a HACK!!! LOL…I only wish I had the comprehension of all of this camera technical know how!!! I am in awe of you… and I am going to FAV this…who knows someday I may try to get technical!

  • You have so much art instinct and vision, I just know you’d love doing things like this. My advice is to shoot lots of things you find interesting that could be used later in your photomontage, or come up with a concept then go out and shoot things to support it. As far as technical knowledge lots of good books in the library look for Tom Ing he has some great stuff easy to follow on photoshop, an essential in my book for the modern photographer. I maintain a library of images, I shoot for these types of purposes. So getting out the camera and shooting is the best thing you can do if you want to create digital art. Thanks for the nice comments appreciate it.
