This is just awesome…hard to imagine sitting here in the Land-Of-Sand!!!!

  • Mary Campbell replied

Texas is a big state, in the north it’s mostly shale stone, with clay dirt. The shale stone makes it not good for growing things, so cattle grazing on the grasses seem to work I guess. The sandy area are more south and south west near El Paso. In Plano when I lived there we had dense clay soil (a pain to dig) Lots of ammendments with peat and such though made for good garden soil. And the endless sun make the flowers thrive (when you watered them). As for bluebonnets, they seem to thrive in dry soil, sandy or clay and like hills for some reason.. I guess the drainage. Anyway March was a nice time of the year there temperatures perfect and flowers everywhere.

Mary, this is a great shot. I’m going to have to hunt this place down. I really hope th lack of rain this spring doesn’t hurt too much.

  • Mary Campbell replied

They usually have a Bluebonnet featival the week they are at their peek, and they give you a map showing where the best displays are, so look up Ennis Tx on the internet, they should give you directions, it’s about 1hour south of Dallas.

  • Mary Campbell replied

By the way you pick up the map at the tourist office, and they have a nice train museum there as well.

This is so incredible. I didn’t know untouched places like this existed. Fabulous shot!

  • Mary Campbell replied

Yes, in Texas our former first lady “Lady Bird Johnson” started this with her wildflower campaign, giving wild flower seeds away to spread throughout the state. Now each Feb-April you can drive through the hill country and see flowers along the roads, and some towns like Ennis the fields are like this for a few weeks every spring. It is lovely.

It is beautiful, but you can’t imagine the strong sweet smell like a perfume bottle spilled under your nose. I wouldn’t mind a hammock under that tree but I’m sure the bee’s like it too..

I live near Ennis! I love when the bluebonnets are in bloom! FYI fellow RB viewers: The Bluebonnet is the state flower- it’s illegal to mow or pick them. So, Everyone just takes pictures lying in them! lol

Thanks Mary, it was my favorite time of the year when I lived in Texas
I didn’t realize it was illegal to mow or pick them.. Glad I just took my pictures and enjoyed the sights and smells.
