Pottery and the Kiva Oven

The foundation of any society is captured in the artifacts it leaves, the Taos pueblo is no different. For centuries the American Indians have lived in these types of dwellings. Making beautiful pottery from the clay earth, and fired in Kiva ovens that sit outside their houses. The Kiva ovens are also used to bake bread. Visit the any pueblo and you will see such scenes. The Taos Pueblo is located in Taos New Mexico, USA.

Pottery and the Kiva Oven belongs to the following groups:

THis is beautiful and somewhere I would like to spend more time. I understand that for artists the light is almost perfect there. I imagine that would apply for photo artists as well.

  • Mary Campbell replied

Thanks Jane, I think you would like it the shadows and light are very intense. For photography that can be good and bad.. depending on the time of day.

Nice shot. I love rounded objects. Makes you want to touch them. Like Disney cars and fat cats. I did a painting of a Navajo woman with a fat clay chicken because I love rounded objects so much. My son thinks she’s a sumo wrestler. Oh, well, I love sumo wrestlers, too!

With the sun on the oven you can just sense the warmth you (or heat) you would feel if you put your hands on it. Love it!

  • Mary Campbell replied

Yes, it was so hot that day too. The oven didn’t even need to be on to have fired these pots! Thanks for the story glad you liked it.
