Thanks Gregg, I was just lucky the island I use to live on in SC had a rookery close to the road, so you could get pretty close. A 300mm lens helps as well.

thanks, they are actually blue pink and white.. tri color herons.. they don’t grow as big as the classic blue heron.

You have got to tell me your secret….do you where camo….and crawl through the weeds? I have such a tough time not spooky these guys! I aploud your skill. Fantastic!

No, I walk softly and carry a big lens (300mm). Mostly hand hold all these bird pictures as it takes too long to use a tripod and you have to be quick with these guys. Also if you have an SLR set your speed up to around 800, and that will help with the handholding as well. It helps if you have a rookery close by as they don’t tend to go far from the nest during nesting season. You’d have to live in the south for that!
