Notes from the Alphabet

Agates and cat’s eyes
and stick-drawn circles
in the dirt
it really didn’t hurt
to lose a few marbles then

fun with Boogers
snapping them
against the wall
they would never fall
boys are intrigued by everything

Climbing trees was my forte
sat in one made up a tune
singing Sycamore, Sycamore…
often with the neighbor
kid who coudn’t hold his water

I did all the typical things
a boy can’t be held back
body-rolling Down the hill
anything for the thrill
grass stains didn’t come out then

oh, how us kids loved to yell
as loud as we could
in every single hollow
just to hear the Echo
it made the birds frantic

we loved to make Funny faces
at every girl in our midst
we did our best to sneak
a peek
polka-dotted panty freaks

Gee wiz was the vernacular
after all it was the 50’s
the time of the Pez Dispenser
and the Lone Ranger
“hiyo Silver, Away!”
