This Consolidated Catalina amphibian floatplane is shown on its take-off run off the waters of Lake Macquarie, south of Newcastle, New South Wales. It had earlier in the day made its first water landing on the Lake and taxied up on to land at the old former Royal Australian Air Base at Rathmines on the Lake shore.
The photo was taken from Coal Point across the Lake from Rathmines.
After take-off, it did a flypast before heading off for its home base at Albion Park Airport, south of Wollongong. The Catalina is owned by the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society and they have their air museum at Albion ParkAirport.
The photo was taken using a Nikon D90 camera fittedw ith a Sigma EX 50-500mm 1:4-6.3 APO DG HSM zoom lens.
The photo was tweaked using Gimp software – brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.
