This privately-owned civil-registered Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation Winjeel was the trainer aircraft in the Royal Australian Air Force (ex A85-439) that superseded the CAC Wirraway in the 1950’s. It is shown here climbing out from its take-off at the Tyabb Airshow held at Tyabb Airport, Victoria, Australia on 3 April 2012.
The photo was taken with a Nikon D70 camera fitted with a Tamron AF Aspherical XR Di LD [IF] 28-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 Macro zoom lens.
The photo was tweaked using Gimp software – brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.

Excellent shot Muz. Wanted to get my hands on one of these trainers when learning to fly. We called them The Provost..

  • Thanks for your appreciation Ted.

The Winjeel looks similar to the Provost but it is an Australian designed aircraft – and I think it also has a different engine (American in the Winjeel and British in the Provost if I’m not wrong).

I saw a red Provost do a very low level knife-edge at the 1980 Biggin Hill Air Show.

Nice one Muz! I’d love to get my lens pointing at one of these, I don’t think there’s ever been one in British skies. The CA-25 Winjeel (Aboriginal for eaglet) was designed and built by CAC in Australia around a 450hp Wasp Junior. The Percival Provost had a 550hp Alvis Leonides and had it’s wheels facing inwards.

  • Thanks for your appreciation and the info about the Provost.
There are 30 Winjeels on the Australian civil register. I think one was exported to the US – might have been to Kermit Weeks.
