The Dassault Mirage IIIO was the Royal Australian Air Force’s frontline fighter aircraft prior to the introduction of the F/A-18A Hornet. It was the RAAF’s first supersonic aircraft.

Four of them are shown here in a diamond formation banked flypast with their undercarriages down. This was taken at the Williamtown Air Show held at RAAF Base airfield at Williamtown, north of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on 3 April 1976. Williamtown was the home base for most the Mirage squadrons.

The photo was taken with an Asahi Pentax SPII camera using Kodak colour transparency film.

The photo has been tweaked using Gimp software – select/copy/paste tools to remove some imperfections, brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.

Great Shot , use to work on them, not good memories

  • Thanks for your appreciation John. Were the Mirages, would you say, “high maintenance”? Still they look good.
