Renew Australia - New Flag Design by

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper today (26 January 2011 – Australia Day) had an article about the call for a new Australian flag.
This design is based around my idea for a new Australian flag which I completed as a painting in 2005.
This design was made digitally using Gimp software. The main colour bands were made using the Rectangular Selection Tool which was then filled with colour using the Bucket Fill Tool. The semi-circle was made using the Ellipse Selection Tool and trimmed and colour added using Bucket Fill.
The stars were removed from a scanned Australian flag image and were isolated by Selecting the background by colour and then changing the Colour To Alpha. Some tidying up was done using Paintbrush Tool. The five-star cluster was isolated separately from the single seven-pointer star so they could be placed separately.
The design is an attempt to amalgamated elements from the current Australian flag design and the Aboriginal flag design and is meant to give the impression of either a rising/setting sun or the rock monolith in the centre of the country known as alternatively Uluru or Ayers Rock.
The titling is, of course, not part of the flag design merely my sentiments about it. They were made using Gimp’s Text Tool, then Gradient Fill Tool and Drop Shadow filter.
I welcome your comments.
