With a final shove the ancient latch surrendered.
Its final cry of protest, signaling the end of its vigil, sounding as a single sharp ‘sprang’ as the heavy door of iron and timber swung ponderously away.
In the next instants, the sort which always seem to follow moments of such explosive effort, the rest of the ragged band stood placidly gazing at that which was framed before them.
Through the now open door, a stairway of simple stone, ridiculously narrow and short compared to its seemingly endless brethren behind them in the kings labyrinth, beckoned.
Light, pure and untainted shown down, exceeding the feeble flickering of the tallow based lamp.
Fendrik, seem to take not of this just then, glancing then extinguishing the minor flame. Crushing out betwixt his fingers that faint but faithful spark, that which had long sustained and guided them through the eternal dark of the world below.
They glanced then meaningfully at each other, noting in the new brightness how all faces were streaked, each with its own combination of soot, grim and sweat.
The moment held a while longer as Darken righted himself, straitening from where his brawn had at last liberated them. The warrior’s visage too reflecting the same deep satisfaction, which they all felt.
Before, as was his way he lumbered forward, leading on into the promise, up in to the light from above.
