when I see musical instruments that look like this I always want to know….. are laptops the new bongos?
MuscularTeeth
replied
the laptops contain all the various noises;
they could be loops (like a drumloop – or a bassline or a lead) and they could be single shot hits (like a trumpet blast or a triangle hit)..
the computer on the left keeps the beats in sync, the one on the right follows its lead.
so computer on left could be playing a drum beat, whilst my collegue on the right computer could add in something else.. all synced together.
the keyboards are used so we can manipulate things on the go (like turning a knob to adjust a frequency, or change the tempo)..
its a lot of fun.

man… i’d love to be sitting at that empty console….........b

so which is middle C ?
MuscularTeeth
replied
depends.
think of the laptops as a lot of instruments.
inside the pc is whats known as “virtual synths” which mimic a real instrument.
so for example i have a piano synth, and middle C would be the 8th key in on the keyboard to the left.
middle c for a drum machine in the laptop wouldnt exist
:)
it depends on whats in action.

so cool! where are you playing live? wish I was in SA to see you going off!

i haven’t forgoteen about the software. just been busy with the blue rose of askhabad.
my mate’s just bought a korg valve thingy- i can’t remember ithe fucking number, but it only cost a grand- it’s basucally a fully programmable drum machine, sampler and tone generator with a nifty touch-sensitive sort of pad thing which basically gives any six year old child the ability to make the chemical brothers sound ‘old fashioned’. i’m getting one for my birthday, possibly, if i remember when it is.

That’s a ” Serious Rig ” there Mr teeth ! You told me you had some Laptops, but that whole kit looks very technical. Good luck with the upcoming tour and if you hit NSW, tell me about it ! A few beers would be in oder if you are going to Sydney to play !

Looks inviting and makes me curious what will happen there. Have fun.

you wouldnt half believe how cool it is. like being at a great dance/rave and being able to dictate when and how and what beats and noises and etc come in and come out. it is some seriously sophisticated software there. it didnt exist as it does now 10 years ago.

Cool:)

I always have mixed feelings about this kind of thing, because to me, it isn’t music in the same way actual musical instruments are, if that makes sense. I’m not saying it’s bad, and it certainly has its place in today’s society, but I also know musicians who have lost jobs to digital music.
Anyway, the photo is great.
MuscularTeeth
replied
trust me, its a music instrument. if you walked over to it and tried to start making music – you cant.
there for some form of talent is required.
its DIFFERENT.

its a little like saying the only way to paint is with an oil painting.
i not sure how much you know of the process involved in making music with a pc.
have you heard any of what i produce? if not, how can you say its not music? why do people want to listen and buy my noise?

great shot

whoah… cool!!! man, you work on laptops? won’t it be cramped when there’s a lot of layers or something? do you compose on the laptop too?
MuscularTeeth
replied
preparing the set takes weeks and is way more involved than just having the sounds. so yes, we have different channels with different sounds/ loops and instruments. laying it out on the laptop is important to do in an efficient manner otherwise it does get too hard to handle. with 2 laptops we divide the sounds amongst them so i might be playing some drums and bass and the other laptop might have some messed up reed flute thing going on…
we compose some of our music on the laptops, but usually we start on a single desktop and then work out which bits should go to which laptop.
georgiegirl
Well, I think what you do is amazing!! Instruments come in all shapes and sizes, from cardboard boxes and saucepans to expensive orchestrial instruments… so I agree, the computer is another instrument. And you definitely have to have lots of musical talent to make music on them.
When I first got my new imac a few years ago I played with garageband… its so hard!! At least I’ve since discovered that I can move the little notes around after bashing the keys in a totally unrythmic manner!! Just as well. One day I might have another go, but in the mean time, I’ll stick to the artwork and photography!!!! I’ll leave the music making to you guys… you do such a brilliant job ;D
MuscularTeeth

aah garage band – its similar to what i use – acid pro – but a bit more basic. but its how i started !
