Brilliant image David. Shows the skill you have in creating an image that has power and mood. I also like the perspective. Tis different from the traditional types of images. Well done.

  • David Murphy replied

Well, I guess this is just ME, Anne…......
but now, my interest is keen…........!!
why is my pic different from traditional views?
I’d like your understanding of this…...why?
To go in the field with a plan is one thing…....
........to go in the field blind is another…...
don’t you have an idea about what you could achieve, all things considered?
ie… the light, your attitude, the subject…......etc…...etc….
..For mine, I go in the field with Nothing…....
    no thoughts, no plan…....
.......i wait for the spur….....the moment of creativity…...
its in us all, I’m sure you would agree…...
.......and I don’t know if that is a perfection…....it is most likely not…...
but it does signify that my intention is to catch something that is my OWN….....
    Isn’t that what you do?

  • David Murphy replied

    Thanks for your indepth reply….
    I do appreciate it,
    I concur with all you’ve said….
    thanks again, Anne!

  • Anne O'Connor

Hi David, I agree. Yes it is you. The different perspective is you as well. What I mean from a different perspective is the Nut taken from the wharf area, rather than the expected photograph taken from the beach etc. I guess I like taking things that are different from traditional tourist postcard shots, but they do not sell as well as what I call traditional shots. The postcard people want only what tourists see and often tourists want that view as well in purchasing images. That is what I mean by traditional. You have also utilized the surrounding areas from a ground perspective, making them fit into the image without taking control of the image very well. The sky is super and this fits with the image. Yes it is you, you have seen and composed the image to suit the conditions at the time. As I do. Yes, like you I do not plan to go and make an image according to plans in advance. I utilize what is there and create accordingly. However this is the first time I have seen the Nut from this perspective. I have seen half versions of it from the wharf, but not the whole and I like it very much and yes, it is your own and it has your stamp on it as do mine. For me, it is looking for that little extra that probably is my stamp. Maybe a wave in the right place at the right time, an angle, a patch of light, something that gives the extra, if that makes sense. I have not thought before now, that this is what makes my images my own, or have my stamp on them. I don’t always see that, but others tell me they know my images. Perhaps this is what makes us do what we do. To me it is a challenge, to create something out of what is there. Not to go and take a perfect image of what has been taken before by someone else. I guess that statement could also refer to “traditional”.

    nice work!

    hey, thanks heaps, tommy…..
    appreciated!!

  • Steve Chapple

    Steve Chapple

Extremely dramatic image. Bold and powerful with great lead in lines.

  • David Murphy replied

yeah, this did work better as sepia, as compared to colour…..
which didn’t have the impact that you refer to…..
    Thanks for the comment, Steve!

  • AlexMac

    AlexMacGreeter

Well I never got to Stanley, unfortunately, Maybe in august =0)

  • David Murphy replied

    hi there!
Stanley looks great, all year round…....
its one of those quaint and historic little towns that are dotted throughout Tassy…..but it has a timeless attraction in the NUT, as you can see, and tourists travel here en masse for the Summer months….....
April is a good time, the place empties by then!
Thanks for the faves again, Alex….
    lovely!

    Ralph Olsson

Just had to fav this again david…i think it is one of your best mate!

  • David Murphy replied

    wow…...thanks heaps…..that is a compliment i regard highly!

  • Ralph Olsson

    Ralph Olsson

I love looking at it…it gives me ideas..inspires me…and i just love how everything is in balance…

  • David Murphy replied

thats the best thing about RB, Im sure you’d agree…
i get inspired similarly, by seeing what others do…..
opens up all sorts of avenues that I’d not contemplated…
    thats got to be good!!

  • Ralph Olsson

    Ralph Olsson

B’oath! I think i might spend more time on sepia now…just keep having a nagging thing in the back of my mind about colopur and landscapes and we need to be true to ourselves, don’t we…i think the ego’s been massaged enough for me:)

  • David Murphy replied

    ......sepia is a brilliant medium.
In this latter part of my photographic bent, it never ceases to amaze me how b n w (sepia) completely alters the feel of a shot…...it introduces more feel and character to pics, whereas colour, albeit exciting in its own way, can detract from an image by introducing too many distractions in the form of the colour…..
    Does that make sense?

  • Ralph Olsson

    Ralph Olsson

Exactly! That’s it…the distractions. B&W asks you to interpret rather than admire! Exactly how i feel at the mo’.

  • David Murphy replied

if i were to show you the colour version of Dawn Nut, you would be amazed at the loss of the dramatic that the sepia version has…...
    .......it became a tourist piccy…..
    Ansel Adams knew, didn’t he?
    Colour is scenery, b n w is a picture!!
    How true is that?
Having said that, colour still has its very special place, and i do try hard NOT to forget that…..lol

  • David Murphy replied

I find that i take a lot of pics these days in both mediums, and depending on the quality, I’ll post both on RB, just to see what sorts of reactions they get…....the level of interest etc…..
And, do you know, up to this point, the interest level is similar, but with a subtle difference….the comments on b n w work are generally more from an artistic bent, if you know what Im trying to say.
The viewers are drawn MORE to the “shape” and feel of the shot, rather than to its overallness…...

  • Ralph Olsson

    Ralph Olsson

Well, there you are…whereas for me, stacks more in favour of the colours over 75% more.. i just feel a bit overwhelmed with all that…i believe that we should try to be as true to ourselves in photography as we are in other aspects of life…perhaps a fraud with the colour me thinks:)
Anyway, for what it’s worth, i like yours both in colour and B&W…just a feel your B&Ws convey a more powerful or even poetic/romatic image:).

  • David Murphy replied

Yeah, your last sentence sums it all up, for me.
There is definetely a more dramatic conveyance of ourselves, our attitudes (as you say, being true to ourselves) in b n w ’s and that certainly helps to add to individualising our work, and therefore makes it more noticeable, I guess.
Colour has its place, but the real essence of what we’re about is reflected better in b n w ’s…...

This is beautiful, there is so much detail and mood that I could stare at it for hours. I climbed the nut with my Grandpa on a holiday in Tasmania in 1984. I fell in love with Tas and hope to get there very soon.

  • David Murphy replied

    Ta for the fave, Melanie…...
Glad you climbed the Nut…....i guess the chairlift wasn’t there in ‘84?
.....I’m not lazy, though…..i go up every so often…...

You live for the moment, I like that, as it is the only way to live: the present, and let opportunity show itself. As a matter of fact everything is an opportunity, we choose if it suits us or not, as long as we are aware that they are here, there, everywhere:))
