Unblinking, a half smile frozen on her lips and knowing eyes watching as the world walked by, it seemed that centuries had passed.
She watched the elderly couple share half a tuna sandwich and throw the other half in pieces to the sparrows. Just yesterday, as pigeons perched on her shoulder, a young man fell to his knees, right by her feet, and offered a ring up to the lass standing beside him.
When the street carnival ran for three days, she stood sentry to five young children, separated from their mothers, crying and bereft until they were found by loving, familiar arms.
“How can you do that all day?” passers-by would ask.
Just throw money, she thought to no avail.
This morning was slightly different. The rogue snatched the old lady’s handbag and ran like the wind – but not fast enough to get past the living statue’s outstretched foot.
