News item last week. Testing being done on unmanned “dummy” planes that can now be controlled on another continent via computer. You press the button in X and the payload gets delivered onto Y. Efficient and cold. Just like war.

It’s shocking but true. Beautifully written!

I like this a great deal – the title is not just relevant to us horse-racing mad Melbournites! Up until I read this I couldn’t remeber whether the horse’s name was efficient or _sufficient _ – is this a catchcry for our times?

I love the use of ‘efficient wins’ at each end of this poem. Anyone not from Oz probably wouldn’t get the reference but because it works on a number of levels it’s quite clever. The last stanza about the ‘hope for their sons’ was very powerful. God the world can be a scary place can’t it?

Nice shot. Also, makes me wonder if an algorithm couldn’t replace the remaining human element in this piece. No joystick. Algorithms (the elegant ones) are notoriously efficient.
