Angels, Unaware

Angels, Unaware

kingston usa **
His name is Jacob, although he said he is also called James.
Why? He said, ‘It’s a name. They are all only names.”
When I asked if I could take his photo, he dropped his dirty plastic bag and without smiling, said, ‘Oh, How pleased I’d be to be caught by you.’
Jacob/James and I spoke for a while, mostly about his beloved cat, and how she hopped into the shower today.
“I took it as a hint,” he said, almost smiling, but only with his very blue eyes. “So I got in there and washed up me, and thought I might do with a change of clothes, too”
He still carries a slight accent he claims is a hold-over from when he was a young man in Wales. His children are all gone. His wife, long dead.
I thanked him, and was about to go on my way, when he leaned back into the window of my car.
“I want to tell you something important,” he said, his already world-weary expression looking more grim than before, ‘I want you to eat better. I want you to take care of your liver. I want you to always smile like you smile now, and I want you to know that the world may be cold, but somewhere there is sun and warmth. I want you to be happy. It’s what’s intended for you.”
He turned and walked away. I sat there, not knowing what to say, save for some expressions of thanks, that sounded hollow to me, after his wish list stated for me.
I thought of The Bible verse:
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unaware..”

A story like this reminds us how much that we have lost touch with our basic needs and desires… Warmth, companionship and the desire to import knowledge.

  • Maureen Maliha replied

I can’t agree with you more, Mark. Totally true as far as I can see.
Seeing him there yesterday, alone, obviously in need of someone to see beyond his rags, touched me so deeply. I needed a reminder about how much I have, and he was a gift to me.
    Thank You, Mark. Much.

Maureen, what an awesome story. I can’t tell you how happy I am that you shared it and that he found YOU to give the message to. I aways tell people on the plane when they are asked to sit in a middle seat or just another seat other then they were supposed to sit…..I tell them to talk to the person next to them….they may have a message for you. Something that you have been waiting to hear. I try to always remember this in my life…..to not take any detour for granted…..I am always looking for the angels. And I always know that I am divinely guided. Wonderful wonderful work!!
Thanks Maureen for this wonderful Portrait of an Angel dressed in an old mans clothes.

  • Maureen Maliha replied

Thanks for stopping to look and to read. I know how hard it is some days to keep up with all the new work, and then to have to Read!! oh, my.
I understand what you tell your passengers, and as for the detours.. they are all just part of the path :-)

This is an excellent image and story Maureen, I have taken similar images and spoken to like minded men in the same situation, they can teach us so much, through their own experiences of life.

  • Maureen Maliha replied

So true, Wayne. I could not drive or walk past this man. There was just something about him… and I am blessed that that little inner voice spoke to me, and told me to stop.
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments, Wayne.

  • Tahnja

    Tahnja

Wow, I am touched by the beautiful image that immediately struck me as an Eternal Father kind of look, or a representation of God somehow in that face. But what I read sent shivers down my spine and tears flowing. Priceless moment from a truly dear man

  • Maureen Maliha replied

It has touched me so deeply that so many have felt what I saw and that I was able to find some words, as small as they are, to explain what it.
Thank you for your kind comment and for taking the time to let me know that it meant something to you. I would so love to find this man again and tell him what he has meant, but…

Hi Maureen….I just logged on…haven’t been on since logging off Friday evening…and what a vision you have presented!! The story so moving….and all the comments so introspectful…. I am not a religious fanatic by any means…but religious none the less…..but to me Maureen – when I set my eyes on your image of this man even before I read your recount – I saw God! His eyes! The vision of this man immediately brought me to the thought that God will walk this earth someday….he is an angel! You could have possibly been talking to Him! I was touched deeper as I read your story… You have captured the sentiment of humanity so beautifully! When we least expect it we are jolted back to what life is all about throught the angels that walk among us…amazing work and words Maureen! Thank you bunches for sharing!

  • Maureen Maliha replied

    Oh, Rita…
I cried when I read your comment. Thank you for seeing what I tried very hard to express via image and word.
You used the word ‘jolt’ in your comment, and it was what i felt as he spoke to me. Some ‘jolt’ that meant more than I can say. I’m not one for hysterical event-line-drawing, but there was just something about this man.
Im SO pleased you read the comments regarding this one. Doesn’t it make you feel better about some things? I know it has done that for me.
Hugs, my friend, and thank you for lookin.

Yes ~ Maureen…it’s amazing how so much can be put into perspective! We all have our loads to carry but it takes a moment in life such as this moment that you have captured …and a significant moment I believe ~ to see the value in our lives! His advice to you was quite amazing ..as if he knew you …..and truly ~ are we not known by Him….we can not hide our trueselves…not at all.. Friend you were touched by Him…and all the blessing you deserve are with you now! :))

Thank You, Joanne :-) I truly loved this man’s face. What has really struck me is that it has survived a week or more of RB. By that I mean, people are still stopping to comment not so much (I think) on the image, but on what the image means to them. oh my I am sorry I have been in my self absorbed little world and missed this. What a breathtaking portrait and a mesmerizing story . I recently met a man called Bob who slept in the car park next to my work and we chatted most days when I went out for a smoke . Some people said I shouldn’t talk with him or share cigarette etc as I might create a dependency . One week ago he went away and I realized I was truly saddened at his going and that it may have been me that developed a dependency.I was and am convinced he was an angel too and that he met more of my needs at the time then I met of his. its been on my mind all week (now and again) and tonight I see your image and story. there is much synchronicity in life :) Thank you for this . Vxxoo

  • Maureen Maliha replied 17 days ago

True—synchronicity… is alive and well. Isn’t it strange how we can take the light or dark at will… It makes me realize how much light there is to savor if only we stop long enough to feel it. I admire your smoke sharing with your Bob. How can we ever know what we might mean to someone? He took some of you away with him, too. Surely it warms some corner of an otherwise cold thought.. Hugs, V. Youre a wonderful inspiration to me. Thank You

The photo and the story ….held me in the longest moment…I felt this man’s essence with your words and the capture of him…
People can so amaze us and when they do….our hearts feel warmer, like a soul hot water bottle on a very cold night…x

  • Maureen Maliha replied 17 days ago

Yes.. the warmth… and I so have to tell you that when you come and leave me a comment, I always savor them. I cant say that I have ever felt that you tossed words out there simply because you could. i admire you for that. Thank you for reading and looking at this one. xo
