Plaster 3 Dimensional Design

Plaster 3 Dimensional Design

One of three photos I have of a piece that was destroyed in an earth quake long ago. First thing I ever carved in plaster, I did no drawings in advance, and the hollowed out round scoops were an after thought that never entered my head when I first started carving it. I say all this because it was a unique and beautiful piece then and my fond feelings for it have not changed. I recently did a larger version in wood and used power tools to make it. It does not have the same energy though for a variety of reasons. I like to tell people if there was one thing I could show them that proved I have an artist’s talent, this would be the one piece.

I don’t think you have a lot to prove regarding talent! You seem to be multi-talented, and this piece is no exception. Shame it was lost :(

I see why you loved it, mate. It truly has a deep beauty, and I’m sure you poured a lot into it. The shot you have taken is excellent, by the way, and really does convey the essence of the sculpture.

  • Mark Ramstead

Actually no, at the time sculpture was the last thing on my mind. The piece was liked but was created in a beginning class about design. Even I did not realize that it was unique, the Canadian teacher told me I could spend a lifetime exploring the idea. I could have done that if I thought it might pay even one months rent out here in L.A.

  • Cyndianne

    Cyndianne

Too bad one has to think about the rent, huh…this sculpture is beautiful, you can tell that it took you to a different place while you were working on it

  • Mark Ramstead replied

I hope to return to this idea in a 3 dimensional software program someday.

  • Mark Ramstead replied

I do “have” a celebration, but also a need to recreate this idea in some sharable way. I do listen Lina, you “Have” an idea of just how complicated I can be… feel happy with me…

This is beautiful in it’s simplicity even though it doesn’t look like it was simple to do, a labour of love. the wood version would be awesome too. what wood would you use? Native timbers no doubt!

Was that destroyed in the ‘89 quake in San Fransisco? I was topping out on Mt Rainier that day, and felt the quake there. 2 days later I was back in Berkeley. Scary stuff for an Californian, but really scary for an Australian from a tectonically stable continent!

  • jacqi

How big is that? It reminds me of a Henry Moore – the sort of scupture that you simply have to run your hands over because the curves are so sensual. Must be lovely in wood.

  • Mark Ramstead replied

It was maybe 14 inches high. I have a wood one in my garden but it does not have the same energy.

  • Ujean1974

Sure, the piece reminds me of the sculptor, Mr. Moore! Love the smooth curve, and the organic form very much!! Fantastic work, Mark!

    How graceful and lovely.
    It’s heart breaking that it
    was destroyed, such a pity.

  • Mark Ramstead replied

It was plaster, and it is not very sturdy. I have thought long and hard about exploring this idea in a 3D software program. Programs I know nothing about at this time. Time it takes to learn and then render such a shape as this. My hesitance is just how much time that is, as I have already used it up and I am running at a deficit in terms of sleep. Once I select which 3D program to use, I look forward to figuring this form out again and eventually recreating it in marble… Thanks

mmm hmm .. Freud would love you right now! Nevertheless, it is interesting and I could see where you would mourn its loss; but, I think anyone who saw anything of yours posted to Red Bubble would know you are an artist.

Such a pity to have lost such a wonderful piece. It’s beautiful!

Hmm, plaster. I’ve never craved plaster before. I imagine it’s quite a relaxing medium to work with? I’ll give it a go!

  • Vin-Elphick

    Vin-Elphick

I’ve just spent a 5 week spell in hospital and during this time you inspired me to explore the medium of plaster for the 1st time. WOW! It’s so different from anything else I’ve worked – it’s amazing. It brings things to my own particular party that nothing else has. Once again… beautiful work, fella!

  • Vin-Elphick

    Vin-Elphick

    PS
Do you know of a way to seal and protect plaster so that it maybe displayed outdoors? I have a commission for a garden piece and I’d be very interested in using plaster.

  • Mark Ramstead replied

Well, contractors are painting plaster all the time with poly something or another’s, trying to protect stucco and other porous surfaces. The catch is will that surface weather well? Or just take the inherent beauty away? I have thought about exploring this type of form with wire, as in a wire basket type of surface and that would age nicely… but one would have to learn how to weave… and deal with the wire.
