Seldom will you drive Montana Highway 200 between Plains and Thompson Falls and not see Big Horn Sheep along, or even on, the road. This is such a problem that there are warning signs telling drivers that in 2009, 25 sheep were killed on this stretch of highway.

I was pleased when this fellow posed for me with the Clark Fork River in the background.

Taken March 21, 2010, near Thompson Falls, Montana.

Nikon D80 DSLR, Nikkor 16-85 mm wide angle/tele/zoom lens set at 85 mm.

ISO 125, f /11.0, 1/45 second.

Processed in Photoshop CS4.

Born in Montana, raised in California, I’ve been holding a camera most of my life. I particularly love photographing the grand landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

Very nice shot! Shaun and I tried to get photos of the mountain goats at the Goatlick, near Essex, and all they looked like were white blobby things.

  • I know what you mean. Other times I’ve tried getting the sheep on the Blackfoot, and they just seem to scare the camera. ;-) I’ve had better luck here in Sanders County because they’re usually right next to the road and not really skittish—which probably explains why so many have been killed. I walked right up to this one—well, getting as close as I felt I dared. I certainly didn’t want to scare him back down onto the highway.

To get the goats at the goat lick, in summer, go under the bridge…you’d never know they’re there unless you stop and look under the bridge!
