Richland County got its name from the boosters who were trying to promote homesteading in the area. The county was formed from Dawson County in 1914, with Sidney as its seat. Historically an agricultural county, oil was discovered in 2000 and brought new wealth to the area. In the 2000 census, 9,667 people lived in the county, with 4,774 of them in Sidney.
Richland County is number 27 on Montana license plates.
