As I drove home from work, the moon was just rising over the hills to the northeast of town. By the time I grabbed my camera, tripod, and long lens, the moon had already risen high enough that I was not able to get the picture I wanted. That said, I’m very pleased with what I did get.

Taken 12/1/09 in Missoula, Montana, using a Nikon D80 DSLR fitted with a Sigma 400 mm telephoto lens and a Sigma 2x tele extender, giving me an effective 800mm length (1200 mm in 35 mm film terms). ISO 100, f /8.0, 1/125 second.

Born in Montana, raised in California, I’ve been holding a camera most of my life. I particularly love photographing the grand landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

The moon ove Bozeman looks similar, but I didn’t get it… I was shaking so hard I gave up.

  • I’m not sure how I managed with coat, muffler, hat, etc. No gloves, and boy did my hands get cold.

  • Glad you enjoyed “my” moon. I love Montana, although I tend to drive through it rather than fly over it. Nice meeting you. Thanks.

Hey! This looks like my moon! LOL I took a shot of this full moon on 12/01/09, right at dusk. I found it interesting in that the southern portion resembles an orange and due West right above the equator there is a small bright light. It was a very intriguing moon and you captured it quite well. Mine is called Full Moon On The Rise and was taken in Southeastern Washington. Nice shot ~:)

  • Sometimes my moon shots work, and sometimes they don’t. I was pleased with this one. I do like the “orange” look—almost as if the section lines are there radiating from the navel. I’ll be sure and check your moon out too. Thanks.
