Consciousness: the Great Enigma
What is the real nature of the Mind? Who are we, really?

Some subscribe to the concept of the Human Soul, an immortal something, mercurial and spirit-like, existing in conjunction with our bodies but beyond its physical parameters. This idea has been long proposed by western religions in particular. Eastern philosophies ~ Hinduisim, Buddhism ~ have proposed that that which “makes us, us” exists outside ourselves as well, but in another way entirely; not as something individual but rather something Universal, something part of and integral to the cosmos in and of itself.
For the most part, modern science has discounted both ideas. We are told by a majority of experts that “what makes us, us” simply lies within the structure of our brains. Consciousness they tell us, is derived from inter-actions of our neurons and synopses. Everything we think and everything we are is physical and transitory. No other, esoteric part of us exists, they say. But another breed of scientists have begun to question that today; they believe that as with space, time, energy and matter, consciousness itself is among the basic forces, or components which comprise our Universe, existing since its outset at the Big Bang. They believe the brain operates not as a “generator” but is more like a “receiver.” According to their theory, that which we call Mind, or Consciousness, is quantumly entangled with the Universe ~ thus existing long prior to our births and continuing beyond our deaths albeit, in another, undetermined form ~ much as Eastern religions have held and taught for centuries.
Some physicists have gone further yet. They say Consciousness IS REALLY ALL THAT IS! That which we perceive as space and time ~ energy and matter ~ stars, planets, galaxies ~ are but designs interwoven in the fabric of the Space/Time/Mind Continuum. The question then being, “WHOSE mind?” But that’s a question few physicists are willing to address!
