Belvedere Mansion/ Galena, IL (USA), often called “The Crown Jewel of Galena,” This was the home of Joseph Russell Jones.

Joseph’s time in Galena was the serving ground for his later years of service to his country ~ from US Marshal, to Chairman of the Republican Party, to businesses of steamboats, cotton and railroads. He was instrumental in carrying support for Grant’s campaign and triumph during the Civil War and Grant’s eventual place as President of the United States. His friendships are the hallmarks of a life well spent. ~ current owners of the Belvedere

The Belvedere Mansion and Gardens are open to the public from mid May to mid November. This 22 room private residence is truly lavish: the finest and “most often visted” Italianate mansion in Galena today.

Put me down as a past visitor. :))

  • Thanks, Claude! I hate to admit it but I’ve yet to take the tour. (My cousin in Chicago tells me, the Belvedere was once a B&B and had a restaurant. That was in the 60’s – long gone now.) Should be interesting to go inside… “One of these days!” lol

    Fabulous capture of this beauty.

  • Thank you, Judy! It’s hard to photograph (I think I need a wider angle lens.) Unless you’re on the bridge nearby, you have to aim the camera up – the house itself is on a hill – which messes with perspective. Well, at least I got it in the frame! Lol!

A gorgeous capture of this stunning estate and an elegantly written description. I enjoyed both!

  • Thank you, Seth! My hubby says the city of Galena needs to hire me for doing their promotions. LOL! Problem is, they have somebody else. Oh well! I enjoy the history anyway. :)
