Inspired by the NatGeo series, Doomsday Preppers on tv.
-———————————————————————————————————————-

Well the family’s in their safe-room
Waitin’ for the crack of Doom
Figured there would be no power
so they gave away the the big TV.
They traded in their phones for cash
Figuring the internet would crash.
Dad said, they’d read a lot ~ maybe they would write
Said they’d do just fine with candle-light!

Things did not work out that way,
No one even reads by day
And everyone’s as bored as bored can be.

One year passed, then two, then three
Now they’re out of coffee, milk and tea.
Uncle Al, he’s flipped his lid
Junior’s a psychotic kid
Uncle Sid, he doesn’t think (but Uncle Sid, he likes to drink)
Penny’s suicidal ~ says she’s lost her hope
Mom gave up some years ago ~ says she needs her dope.
The Grid did not go down ~ but they can’t get to town;
Used to have a truck
Now they’re out of luck
The fuel did not run out…
They’re too broke to buy it.

Now and then they catch a fish
(Mom’s too stoned to fry it)
There’s algae in the water jugs, there’s mildew in the flour
Rats ate the crackers and the beans went sour
Solar panels worked okay (til lightning fried the whole array)
Didn’t matter anyway…
Doomsday came
Doomsday went
But they can’t move ~ they can’t afford the rent.

The clocks went right on tickin’
And the world just went on kickin’
Dad still says it’s comin,
Says it’s no good runnin’,
Just an error in the date.
By God, we went to all this trouble
Now we’re gonna damn well wait!

When I was a kid, “fall out shelters” were the rage across America. I don’t know how many really built fall out shelters, but people talked about it all the time. The song on YouTube (above) is from the early 60’s ~ and proves the point! They don’t call them fall out shelters now, And now, it’s not just fear of nuclear annihilation. It’s everything from pole shift to Yellowstone erupting, everything from killer asteroids to rogue black holes. Much of the hysteria is based on prophecies of Armageddon ~ due (supposedly) Dec. 21, 2012. Which came and went…

I have the same reaction now as I did then: would you really want to do this? Would it help? Would you keep your sanity? What kind of world would await you when you finally crawled from hiding back into the light? Many of these Cataclysms wouldn’t be survivable to start with; and what if nothing happens after all? Again!
