No longer in use, this is one of many former mining tunnels in the town of Galena, Illinois (USA). “Galena” refers to tailings from the lead mines; in the 18th and 19th century, as well as early portions of the 20th, Galena was a major steamboat port and mining town. Because it’s quaint, historical and beautifully preserved (plus, the shopping and the restaurants are great! )its main trade is tourism, now. But the landscape is riddled with old tunnels even though the mines are gone. Here and there, you see them boarded up or covered over… mystery-entrances to “who knows where?”
