Nadya Emanuel Johnson

I am a once-upon-a-time Chicagoan now in rural northern Illinois following a long stay in “Hotel California” (30 years!). Today, I am fortunate enough to live in rural countryside where beauty waits around the bend of every two-lane highway and at every season of the year. Although my work runs the gamut from the gritty to the phantasmagorical, my first love is still the capture of the natural world in all its myriads of moods and beauties.

Art has always been my avocation and at times, my livelihood. I believe in a quote from Duane Michals: “Photography deals exquisitely with appearances. But nothing is what it appears to be.” Therefore, in much of my work the line between Reality and Non-Reality is often blurred (if there is such a line in the first place), and I view the camera and the darkroom – in this case, Photoshop – not as separate entities, but as partners in the dance. In some sense, although I love photographing Nature. I am also an image-maker painting not with oils or acrylics but with pixels.
