THIS is fun!
Belonging to a volunteer fire company when you are under the age of 18 can be frustrating. The time is spent being a gopher, doing the clean up, feeling left out. Idle time is spent sitting around the station listening to WAR STORIES of those with experience.
Even though you are told your presence is important, the few jobs you are allowed to do are necessary, you still want to experience fighting the beast that is fire. To be the rescuer, the hero, rather then playing a bit part. It’s difficult to appreciate when you are so young to life itself, that what you do is being part of the big picture.
It takes a team. Try explaining that to one who is young, eager, and oh so hungry!
But then they get the opportunity to join in on a training. A step closer to doing the job you hunger to do. To get that first bite of excitement, even if it’s under the safest conditions and guidelines…it beats rolling up yet another section of wet dirty hose! You put on your gear, you look like everyone else. You are one of them. You are a fire fighter.
