New World Monkeys (v1.0)

The highway is a wet tongue
curled and sticky with the sugary
energy needed to drive from
Melbourne to Brisbane.

Deadly as the drunk
driver weaving across lanes.
Yet his tongue dryer
than the Sahara.

We are new world monkeys,
desperate to escape the rat-race.
Spirits crushed like empty VB
cans littering the M1.

New world monkeys,
screeching in shock, never awe.
That abused word – awesome – meaningless
in its repetition, substitution.

New world monkeys,
hoping to climb corporate ladders.
Not noticing that the snakes
rear, fangs exposed, swift.

New world monkeys,
scratching ourselves;
wondering where and when
did our innocence go?

New world monkeys;
filthy, degraded, teeth bared.
We are new world monkeys;
a grim parody of humanity.
