Although I grimace,
shiver, throb and ache like a
quiver of cobras
I hear your plaintive
voice like trembling sorrow; the
sympathy of doves.
I would like to fly,
free from fear and hope, like an
aerie of eagles.
But your charisma
weighs on my aloneness; the
charm of hummingbirds.
Perhaps I would hit
you for insolence, like a
smack of jellyfish.
Disdain is pretence,
officious and fussy, the
parliament of owls.
However I sigh,
I cannot deny you’re a
warren of wombats.
My name is Deborah,
so I choose instead to gain
the zeal of zebras.
I love collective nouns – this is a quick attempt to put some of my favourites from list below into a haiku series:
rabble of butterflies
quiver of cobras
piteousness of doves (changed to sympathy in haiku for syllable purposes)
aerie of eagles
fesnying of ferrets
implausability of gnus
charm of hummingbirds
smack of jellyfish
parliament of owls
warren of wombats

I’ll defer to Anna Quindlen, of The New York Times: “People who are knowledgeable about poetry sometimes discuss it in that knowing, rather hateful way in which oenophiles talk about wine: robust, delicate, muscular. This has nothing to do with how most of us experience it, the heart coming around the corner and unexpectedly running into the mind. Of all the words that have stuck to the ribs of my soul, poetry has been the most filling.”
