Wordplay

When my inbox is full,
and I fear how language
is sliding from
our greatest achievement
to a state of technological,
illogical, misunderstood
messages…

I strive to verbalise
a dialect of worth.
I wish for linguistic
smoothness,
rather than a rough,
anything-goes language:
where my grammar
is groundless;
idiomatic ideas are
unsupported;
or syntax is
unsubstantiated.

Formulating a fluent
vernacular, moving from
awkward etymology to
structured morphology,
I can remove
misplaced apostrophes
as easily as I reject
pedantic semantics.

Because while I believe
in self-expression, and
the importance of
colourful communication,
I must concede that
even more powerful
than human’s ability
to speak, to talk,
is the quiet wonder
of discovering

someone who
empathetically
listens,
is actually,
genuinely
listening,
without being told
Hush;
without being told
Please listen to me;
but because
they actually
want to.

Words are power,
and a gentle ear with whom
we share our words –
wonderful!

Artist's Description

For my friend Sonia, who is the best listener I’ve ever met. Also related to loving wordplay and the annoyance of a full inbox.
