Perhaps perhaps perhaps

Perhaps this is the price I must pay?
I fear there is no way to break free,
When I need to push you far away.

When I succumb to your whispered “Stay”,
Even then I know you’re bad for me.
Perhaps this is the price I must pay?

I cleave to your heart as sun to day,
Yet cry as I fall on bended knee,
When I need to push you far away.

Silenced by you when I want to say
“Begone, no more, please just let me be”.
Perhaps this is the price I must pay?

I feel entrapped, like a creature fey,
As you claim to love me but don’t see
When I need to push you far away.

Even as I want to capture prey,
Your animal heart beats so cruelly.
Perhaps this is the price I must pay?
When I need to push you far away.

Perhaps perhaps perhaps

Artist's Description

Villanelle – A 19-line poem consisting of five tercets and a final quatrain on two rhymes.
The first and third lines of the first tercet repeat alternately as a refrain closing the succeeding stanzas and join as the final couplet of the quatrain.

I consider the most famous example to be Dylan Thomas’ Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night

I have employed boldface and italics to hopefully more easily demonstrate the correct structure of Villanelle poetry.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night,

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night,

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

PS This is the first one I have ever written. Some other fine examples on RB below:
