The delights of dating

Miss,
Might I call you miss?
Or is it Ms?
Apparently they are two
Very different things

Sir,
Should I call you goodsir?
Or is it preferable
To label you badboy?

Such are the agonies
Of angsty attempts
To connect.

Then there’s The Talker.
Could you please refrain
From such self-righteousness?

This monologue
Isn’t fucking conversation.
You put forth ideas like they are facts,
Undisputed logic and truth.

But they are not my worldview,
Nor my perspective.
I want a wonderful ideas-exchange
Who has ever loved a lecture?

Time for you to change.
Cat got your tongue?
Why so quiet?
Sigh

Must I be Ms Mystery?
See if that sparks some interest?
Is that a cheeky glint I glimpse?
Ooh, that’s a look I adore.

Until I guess he’s just preparing
More sentences in his head
With which to impress.

So here it comes,
What can I do in retort?
I sip my coffee, I sigh a deep breath
At all your blah blah blah.

Politeness and niceness become horror.
I’m cornered in this pretty cafe,
Unsure of how to get away.

I know how it goes.
You want to be interesting,
Liked, appreciated, understood.

But advice distorted to well-meaning instruction?
Ridiculous! I tell you unequivocally
And expect a sharp reply.
Luckily it’s just more of your blah blah blah.
You didn’t even notice my sigh!

The odd thing?
I don’t despise you
I just wish you’d care
More and speak less
.

Maybe I’ll put this fork in my eye
Wonder if you’d even blink
Blah Blah Blah
Sigh

Humorous commentary on dating, it is also a 2010 rewrite of a 2009 poem
The heart of this poem is the banality that we endure in some conversations:
Blah Blah Blah
Sigh

I’ll defer to Anna Quindlen, of The New York Times: “People who are knowledgeable about poetry sometimes discuss it in that knowing, rather hateful way in which oenophiles talk about wine: robust, delicate, muscular. This has nothing to do with how most of us experience it, the heart coming around the corner and unexpectedly running into the mind. Of all the words that have stuck to the ribs of my soul, poetry has been the most filling.”
